We were delighted to welcome the Lewisham Young Mayor candidates to our assembly this week, where they shared their inspiring visions for supporting young people and enhancing the community.
About the Young Mayor Programme
The Young Mayor Programme provides a platform for young people to have their voices heard by decision-makers. Established in 2004 by Sir Steve Bullock, former Mayor of Lewisham, it is the longest-running initiative of its kind in the UK. The programme has influenced councils nationwide, encouraging similar opportunities for youth engagement.
The Young Mayor is supported by a network of young advisers and the Young Citizens’ Panel, which connects with forums, networks, and school councils across the borough to gather diverse perspectives.
What Does the Young Mayor Do?
The Young Mayor serves a one-year term and takes on several key responsibilities, including:
- Acting as a spokesperson for the borough’s young people.
- Advising the Mayor on youth-related issues.
- Collaborating with young advisers and the Young Citizens’ Panel to shape policies and decisions.
- Overseeing a budget of at least £25,000 to support youth-focused initiatives.
We are especially proud that two of our own pupils, Rahat and Addis, are standing as candidates in this year’s election. Their courage, ambition, and dedication to making a difference are truly commendable. We wish them the very best of luck in this exciting journey!
The election will take place on Wednesday 5th February 2025. All of our secondary students get the opportunity to cast a vote.
