Non-Violent Resistance (NVR) Parenting Group

30/01/2025

We have recently finished our Non-violent resistance parenting group. It ran for 8 weeks providing parents with strategies for supporting and managing challenging behaviours at home. The course was run by Emma Moore our School Home Support and Pastoral Manager, with Sam Waring (Assistant Headteacher) supporting.

One of the key mottos of NVR is of the following: Unite, Repair, Persist, Resist and I feel this is the best motto to sum up the programme

  • UNITE – reconnecting with each other
  • REPAIR – repairing the harm
  • PERSISIT – keep trying, persist with the new ways
  • RESIST – not slipping back to previous ways

The NVR course aims to offer a series of tools and techniques to support parents and carers of children / young people who display challenging attitudes and behaviours.

Parents are guided through a set of core principles based on the idea of carefully planned actions to help support the management of challenging behaviour.

It takes time to practice and time to see change and as parents gain greater confidence and self-control, it enables difficult issues to be addressed in an effective manner through a process of increasing parental presence. As parental presence grows, so does the rebuilding of the loving parent-child relationship.

The course was very well received with some amazing feedback, shown below.

‘Before the course, I sometimes felt I had little say in my child’s actions. Even when I’m not physically around, increasing my presence was a real eye-opener. By consistently encouraging positive behaviours and sharing clear expectations, I’ve noticed my child is much more open to chats. The whole “connection before correction” idea has transformed how we interact, making our conversations more productive.’

‘I enjoyed it as you can see you aren’t the only ones living in certain situations. It might be tough to deal with but with the way the facilitator presented it, it is a battle you can win.’
